Cuyahoga is the least impressive Nat’l Park we’ve seen. (To be fair, Brandywine Falls was closed for road construction.) More like a state park, with residential and agricultural areas throughout. Originally designated as a national recreation area, it was upgraded to Nat’l Park status in Oct 2000 by President Bill Clinton. Why? It was right before the presidential race between George Bush and Al Gore. Ohio had a hot streak of picking the winning presidential candidate, so Clinton wanted Ohio to think kindly of Democrats. Danged if they didn’t pick Bush to keep the streak going!
- Props to the park for creating a selfie stand in front of the sign.
- The Ledges Trail, with sandstone outcrops covered with moss.
- Stone steps created by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Created by FDR in 1933, the CCC allowed single men between the ages of 18 and 25 to enlist in work programs to improve America’s public lands.
- Mike, the championship napper!
- The Erie Canal opened in 1825, connecting the Great Lakes to New York City.
Great pics and stories Sue! Happy New Year to you and Mike!!
