Mike flew directly into central Utah and was met by a private guide for a four day trek into the heart of Grand Staircase-Escalante Nat’l Monument. Escalante features a 1,000-mile maze of interconnected canyons. The high elevation of almost 6,000 ft. makes it cooler for hiking. There are no established trails here. It’s hard to find your way through, and hard to find water.
- Shawn Miller, who has 18 years experience hiking in Escalante, said Mike “Ran me ragged”!
- Uninhabited beautiful country, with rivers running through deep canyons.
- With no trails, sometimes bushwhacking was a necessary skill.
- Mike snug as a bug in a rug in his bivy sack (lighter than a tent).
- This permanent ladder is attached to the cliff to descend without totally wiping out.
- Look up, Mike! Now that’s a big wall.

Wow! It actually does not look like Mike is comfortable in the bivi sack… but still having fun!
