Great Sand Dunes is one of 27 night sky national parks. No nearby industry to pollute the air, no lights nearby to ruin your sight. The high elevation is a bonus!
- Between the 8,200 ft. elevation and the reflection off the sand, we really had to lube up with the sunscrreen!
- While hiking, sand avalanches must be avoided.
- Lots of people attempted to slide down the sand with all manner of skis, sleds and kiddie wading pools. When you fall, it’s like um, sandpaper. Ouch.
- Mike passed many younger hikers on the trail – here he is at the peak of the dunes!
- After making record time hiking to the top of the 800 ft. tall reversing dunes, Mike makes his way back.
- Mike trying not to take home so much park service souvenir.
- Incredible sunset over the dunes.
- We stayed after dark to check out the stars. Thanks to the app on my phone, we were able to track and see the Space Station with the naked eye. Thrilling!!
