Driving along 17 Mile Drive in Carmel, CA with jaw dropping views. My favorite stop (besides Pebble Beach!) is Bird Rock. Back in 1930, it was covered with 4 to 5 feet of pelican and cormorant guano, until some industrious company decided to “harvest” all that to be used as fertilizer. Can you imagine that job?!
- Once the guano was gone, the sea lions could actually get traction, and have been sunning themselves – and fighting the cormorants for territory ever since.
- We didn’t see a single seagull land on the island. Apparently they’ve been voted off!
- “The art of life lies in a constant readjustment to our surroundings.” Okakura, The Book of Tea
- A little par 3 at Spanish Bay on the coast of the Pacific.
- Carmel Valley Ranch is an incredible golf course with the most beautiful trees.
- View from the intimidating back tees. We were lucky it wasn’t windy!
- The pandemic has disrupted the California wine industry like no other event since Prohibition – more than droughts or wildfires. California produces 81% of US wines. If you drink wine, please buy domestic.
- Napa and Sonoma not only have some of the finest wine in the world, but also some of the most beautiful scenery.
