Family owned and run Hubbard Ranch in the tiny town of Emigrant, MT (population 372) is about 18 miles from Yellowstone National Park. We had a blast riding horses to herd cows for about six hours a day – three days in a row. When we left, they told us our horses were going to get the day off! We didn’t see any bear, but heard enough stories to keep us on the edge of our saddles.
- Paradise Valley, with the Yellowstone River winding through.
- We were definitely in bear territory. Our wrangler carried a pistol just in case.
- Bear claw marks, about 10 feet high.
- We found this elk antler shed, which is now in our home!
- Even the bears had masks.
- I can relate to this.
- Mike trying to beam up!
- Gus the Wonderhorse. I brushed him every day after our last ride.
- The perfect bathroom for the stables.
- Picking our way through the wildflowers. Glorious!
- Look at those beautiful clouds! There was weather brewing – later that evening we had a 60mph microburst of wind.
- Trying to reason with cows – learning when to “psst” and when to “YAHHH”!
- Captain Mike on his trusty steed, named Captain, of course.
- A calm moment when the cattle were staying on the trail (as opposed to running under the trees and other hijinx).
- Montana has a way of making you feel very, very small.
- On a windy mountaintop with Wrangler Wray. The Gallatin Mountains are the scenic backdrop.
- Big Sky Country sunset.
