This park is huge! It takes a while to see 221,390 acres. Bonus: Petrified Forest National Park is the only national park that contains a segment of Historic Route 66.
- Created in 1962 by President Kennedy.
- Petrified wood happens underground, when wood becomes buried in water saturated by sediment or volcanic ash. If you look closely, you can even see remains of insects.
- The Petrified Forest is known for its fossils, especially fallen trees from about 225 million years ago.
- Water created Agate Bridge and will destroy it. When this tree died over 200 million years ago, river sediment prevented its decay. Now the gully of water underneath is weakening the base.
- Looking for color in the waves of grey.
- Trying to look young next to this VERY OLD petrified rock.
- Newspaper Rock has more than 650 images, created by the ancestral Pueblos over 2,000 years ago.
- The Mountain Lion petroglyph is iconic for the state of Arizona.
- Trying to find our park.
