It takes four long hours to drive from Vancouver, BC to Kamloops, so it’s logical to stop at the tourist trap at the halfway mark, right?
- Hells Gate – so called because the Fraser River narrows here, making the water squeeze through the eye of a needle.
- We took a tram down 500 ft. for this aerial view of the swirling chocolate brown rapids. Even the eddies look unpredictable. The occasional log floats by, thrashed and splintered by the forces of nature.
- Mike on the bridge. See the train? When the tracks were built, they blasted rock and threw debris in the river, making the rapids even more treacherous, especially for salmon. Fish ladders were added a few years later.
- Think that First Native name is hard to pronounce? Try the Anglicized version: Kamloops
- Why yes, I did hit a 220 yard drive. Downhill, that is.
- How’s that for a spectacular tee box?
- Tobiano is a spectacular but tough course. Mr. and Mrs. Raney were proud to scramble to even par.
- The star attraction in Wells Gray Provincial Park is Helmcken Falls, named after a British officer (of many consonants) who never even saw the falls.
- Short but wide Dawson Falls. For a sense of scale, check out the tiny hikers on the left.
