The official name of Jordan is the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Hashemite refers to the Arab royal family claiming descent from Hashim, great-grandfather of Muhammad. They have ruled Jordan since it emerged from the post-World War I division of the Middle East made by Britain and France.
