- Surfing was invented in Hawaii – and they’re proud of that fact!
- Surfboards ready for a day of action.
- The sand was skimpy on Waikiki. More frequent king tides have forced resorts to build larger retaining walls, exacerbating the erosion.
- Still the finest powdery sand, even if they have to enrich it with replacement on a regular basis.
- The War Memorial was a stunning outdoor saltwater pool on the edge of the ocean. Closed for now, it’ll take millions to restore it to its former glory.
- Mike at the Banyon Tree in the International Village. Now surrounded by an upscale mall, the tree was planted in the mid-1800’s and is a protected landmark.
- A Japanese tradition – overflowing sake into the masu (the square wooden box) traditionally signals the generosity of the restaurant.
- USS Arizona is an underwater grave, with brave men still trapped in its holds. A small bit of oil still leaks to the surface, known as “black tears”.
- Historical jewelry from WWII.
- The USS Arizona sunk in 9 minutes after a vicious surprise Japanese air attack.
- Roosevelt’s original draft of his famous Pearl Harbor address. “Infamy” was a last minute change.
- Taps at the end of the day, in front of the USS Arizona Memorial.
