In January 2018, dive researchers were thrilled to find a passageway in these cenotes (limestone caverns), connecting two huge systems, and discovering the longest known underwater cave in the world. We dove several parts of it: Dos Ojos, El Pit and Dreams Gate.
- Ready to descend! The water was about 75 degrees (F) so we had full wetsuits.
- The sunlight from the cavern opening illuminates the beginning of the dive.
- Dos Ojos (Two Eyes) is shallow but with a complicated route requiring divers to follow an underwater line.
- Once inside the cavern, we had to rely on flashlights to navigate.
- The underwater navigation known as the “Barbie LIne”, apparently has a different pose daily.
- We threaded through stalactites and stalagmites. Like flying through Carlsbad Cavern!
- Mike looking at the incredible limestone cave formations.
- The dive is quite shallow, only about 20ft. maximum.
- Mike climbing out of a sinkhole. The dives weren’t deep, but the stairways were steep!
