We tied up to a different jungle riverbank every night, and had lots of interaction with real Amazonians. Villages are small, and tightly knit. They seemed content. We didn’t hear any whiny kids.
- She only knows her little village. The innocence of youth.
- Learning Spanish, English and local dialect. These kids will be trilingual.
- I love her defiance. She’ll be an Amazon woman.
- These Amazon kids loved seeing their photo in the camera.
- Boys playing in the river, barefoot. Parasitic infections are common here.
- Life moves slowly here. They’re not interested in our frenetic pace.
- A local craft store, accessible only by boat.
- This little guy was peeking from behind his mama’s stitchwork.
- Kids having a blast in the water. No iPad, no TV, just fun.
- Hot and steamy jungle hike – it was 90 degrees and 90 percent humidity.
- Our Amazon baptism, because we’re in a rainforest, after all.
- Local artisans dye palm tree strands with vegetable dye.
- Rubber used to be king in the Amazon, until it was transplanted to more easily accessible plantations. Now 90% of rubber comes from Asia.
- Kayaking – we always made sure we got back to the boat before what I called, “bug thirty”.
- Time for a new roof on the ol’ homestead. The community will work together to make it happen.
