We were definitely out of our comfort zone, regularly surprised by new sights, sounds and smells. Our guides were incredibly talented at both listening and mimicking bird and monkey calls.
- Amazon fruit is really different. Our guide said when the fruit is too ripe, larvae get in. The locals eat larvae for protein.

- Catfish in the Amazon are large and plentiful. Catfish ceviche is the most popular way to eat it.

- These guys live on their boat, selling or trading bananas along the river to make ends meet.
- Hilarious towel art, using Mike’s swim trunks and my t-shirt.
- The slowest animal you’ll ever see, the sloth sleeps about 20 hours a day. We were in stitches watching him “panic” when he saw us.
- An ingenious contraption to squeeze the sugar water out of sugar cane.
- Monk saki monkeys playing in the trees.
- A local concoction of garlic, ginger and other indigenous herbs, meant to cure stomach problems. Health care is pretty much a do-it-yourself affair here, along with advice from local shamans.
- Watch your step in the jungle.
- This miniscule frog landed on my iPhone while we were kayaking! He’s about the same size as the power button.
- Pink dolphins! A spectacular freak of nature.
- Swimming in the Amazon, imagining piranhas nibbling our toes. Needless to say, not everyone was willing to jump in.
