Panama was the destination for the latest guy trip – sailing to remote islands off the Caribbean coast. Let’s just say it wasn’t Mike’s favorite trip. He tried sleeping on the top deck for extra room, but then it rained. Every night. The low point was when they were running low on supplies, and breakfast was Spam and cashews. He said the best part was interacting with the locals, who spoke their own dialect. Sometimes it’s great to travel because it makes you appreciate home!
- The good ship Cirque, a 42 ft. monohull, was the vessel. Sleeping was tight for 4 guys.
- Islands off the east coast of Panama, ready for hopping.
- The fearless crew: Jim, Larry, Lewis and Mike.
- Mike’s job was to manually hoist and lower 135 ft. of chain and anchor at each stop.
- Vibrant coral made up for the lack of fish.
- Inviting beachfront!
- Guaba, otherwise known as the ice cream fruit.
- Local Panamanian selling Langustino lobsters – the guys bought all 14!
- Mike trying to impress with his tightrope walking skills.
- Hot, sweaty but happy jungle hikers.
- The barefoot locals had a good laugh over gringoes who got their fancy shoes stuck in the mud.
- Temps were in the 90 degree range, with sometimes VERY saturated humidity.
- Larry observing from a safe vantage point.
- Strawberry poision dart frogs love to eat spiders, so they’re OK.
- Local kids selling pastries their mom had made from a dugout canoe.
- One of the more touristy restaurants. No railings here.
- A typical thatched hut home has no windows. Stilts protect from flooding, insects and even jaguars.
- Brief periods of awesome can’t be all bad.
