Stingray City is a series of shallow sandbars off the coast of Grand Cayman. Stingrays began gathering here when fishermen stopped here to clean their catch. Now, the stingrays associate the sound of a boat motor with food. It seems dangerous, but is really fun, and tourists have been going there for decades. I even kissed one – a salty kiss that tasted a little like squid.
- We volunteered first to hold the stingray.
- Mike checking out the stingers. The large ones we held were females. The males are about 1/3 the size.
- Holding onto a stingray is a slippery business.
- Stingrays brushing up against my legs.
- Warning – do not drive over blue iguanas, who like to hide under cars for shade.
- Cayman blue iguanas are the most massive lizard in the Western Hemisphere. They can be up to 5 ft. long and live for 67 years!
- Red birch, also called the “tourist tree” because the bark is always red and peeling.
- The turtle farm in Cayman raises baby turtles for release into the wild.
- No customers today at the boat launch. Even a kayak would be smashed to smithereens on that lava.
- Mike wisely upwind of the blowhole.
- Whoever said milkshakes aren’t for adults has obviously never had a Mudslide.
- GC is such a tax haven that this one five story building is home to over 20,000 corporations. I think they should have to come here once a year, maybe on bring your kid to work day?
