Key West is and island only 4 miles long by 1 1/2 miles wide. Between 1828 and 1850, it was the wealthiest city in Florida, thanks to fishing and salt production. Now the main industries are tourism and the Naval Air Station. With a temperature variation of only 10 degrees year-round, it’s a winter delight.
- No one would accuse us of packing light for this trip. We have bins with SCUBA, warm clothes, snacks and toiletries. At the end of each leg, we go “shopping” in the plane.
- This concrete buoy is really an old sewer junction that was dug up in 1983, and was too heavy to move. It’s not really the southernmost point, but it IS the most photographed spot in Key West.
- Mile marker zero, where the longest highway in the US starts, ending 2,369 miles later in Maine.
- Now we know where Santa goes after Christmas for a well deserved nap.
- We just had to go here, based on the name.
- Clever menu. We polished off a little Cookie Nookie.
- Now I know why they call it a Shell station.
- Seattle is 2,726 miles away!
- Cigars are pushed heavily in Key West. I’ll bet they can’t wait to get their hands on Cuban tobacco.
