The Dominican Republic is the most visited of all the islands in the Caribbean by a wide margin. We stayed on the south coast, which is a study in contradictions. A beautiful resort, surrounded by poverty and sugar cane fields, which are largely worked by migrant Haitian labor. The beaches are beautiful, but the overall poverty rate is 35%. Our dirt buggy ride went slowly through the villages where little children ran alongside and begged for money.
- The CLEAN photo
- Overwhelming poverty with cute kids begging.
- At least the mud made the mosquito bites feel better.
- I had so much dirt in my eyes that I did the last 10 minutes of the trip with only one eye open.
- That one little guy needs a belt to hold up his pants!
- The sign above the door says “God above all!”. These must be some heavenly eggs.
- Sugar cane fields as far as the eye can see.
- Much of the sugar cane is harvested my migrant Haitians, who work back-breaking 14 hour days.
- Mike trying some sugar cane. You chew a juicy chunk then spit it out.
- Mamajuana is a local concoction of tree bark, red wine, rum and honey.
- Getting into the mud puddles!!!
- We are now officially a Tide commercial.
