Hilton Head is a golfer’s paradise combined with endless walkable beaches. In 1663, Capt. William Hilton sailed from Barbados, landing here to explore lands granted by King Charles II to eight Lord Proprietors (whose job it was to oversee the Carolina territory). King Charles II was popularly known as the Merry Monarch. He and his wife had no children, but he acknowledged at least twelve illegitimate children by various mistresses. Merry indeed!
- Fourteen miles of beach to walk
- Food fight! This was a good 10 minute battle.
- We have now eaten all these things, which is where the all that beach walking came in handy.
- Old Fort Pub is located on an historic Civil War fort where Union soldiers dug moats and put alligators in them for protection.
- Capt. William Hilton found the headland near Port Royal Sound, and named it Hilton’s Head, after himself.
- Golf bikes at the thankfully flat Arthur Hill Golf Course. They”re pretty top heavy – awkward to ride.
- Gotta work off those pralines!
- The driving range at the George Fazio course had only Birdie Balls, which was like hitting a hair curler. It works, goes about 40 yards.
- Hilton Head was alive with butterflies, migrating their way down to Mexico for the winter.
