We’ve been involved with RTS for years, I used to be on their board. They bring volunteers and communities together to help low income homeowners live in warmth, safety, independence and dignity. On April 25th, the 25th anniversary of Rebuilding Together Seattle, they fixed up 25 houses! We were lucky enough to work at one, owned by a 102 year old Japanese woman and her 70 year old caretaker son. In one day, our group of 25 cleaned carpets, installed new carpet runners, rebuilt kitchen cabinets, repaired old wooden sash windows, painted window frames, mowed the lawn and trimmed up the yard. A job well done!
- Mary Herche, my dear friend who is on the national RTS board, introduces the homeowner and her son.
- Some treasures hadn’t been moved for dusting in decades.
- Kristen Cramer was up to a little ladder work.
- Those with practical skills were in high demand!
- Renee laying the carpet runner
- Rolling new carpet down the stairs.
- Michele is all smiles even though her arms ache from painting.
- Thank you Domino’s for the complimentary pizza!
- Repairing the broken window sashes.
- The owner holds a photo of herself at age 18, “before I met my husband”. When did she meet him? On the day of their arranged marriage.
- A touching moment, when the owner found her own photo in the internment camp yearbook from 1943.
- Dirty, sweaty, paint spattered and proud. That’s our crew!
Well done a Sue and Mike, very nice.
