Charming Spanish colonial architecture and cobblestone streets, at least for the central tourist areas. In the non-touristy areas, Cuba has a real housing problem. Crumbling concrete and brick buildings, battered by tropical sun and hurricanes, have been neglected for decades. Cubans have few resources (no Home Depot here) nor could they afford concrete and lumber if they could find it. Housing is assigned by the government, so you might be on an eternal waiting list for a different home.
- Cubans have a high smoking rate, and a lot of second hand cigar smoke
- Climbing a stifling crowded circular staircase was worth the view in Trinidad, Cuba
- José Martí, a 19th century Cuban hero for independence from Spain.
- Lovely handmade shawls
- Old Cuban fighter planes, turned into “art”
- Ouch! Uncle Sam taking one in the jaw. “Bloqueo” means embargo.
- Attempting the Cha Cha with a real Cubano
- No official Coca Cola in Cuba – might as well go for the Piña Colada
