In 1858, Bernadette said that the Virgin Mary
appeared to her 18 times.
Lourdes grotto is known for miraculous healing
 waters.  People stood in line for hours to touch
 the wet walls of the grotto.
Lourdes, a little town named after a local
leader in medieval times, has a current population
of 15,000.  Religious pilgrimages here annually
swell that number to 5 million. Each one of
these crosses was brought to Lourdes by a
pilgrimage this year.  Lourdes has the greatest
 number of hotels per square kilometer in France,
 just behind Paris.
