Port is wine made with grapes only from the
Douro region in Portugal.  Ruby, Tawny or
White (!) it can be sweet or dry.  We tasted
some 40 year old Tawny port – nutty,
smooth and delicious.
Porto is the heart of the port region, like the
Napa Valley of Portugal.  It was protected as
an appelation region in 1756, making it the
oldest defined and protected wine region
in the world.  Sorry, France.
Beautiful old boats used to transport port in
wooden barrels.   Framing them is Dom Luis
Bridge, created by a partner of Eiffel.
The iron bridge designed into the ever
present blue and white tiles.  It does remind
you of the Eiffel tower, doesn’t it?
