Team penning was a completely new sport. In an arena, there are ten cows at one end and three horses with riders at the other end. Specific instructions are given to get certain cows (like a black one, a brown one and a spotted one) from one end of the arena to the other, and chase them into a corral. Each team competes with timer. No ropes, just chasing cows with horses.
Let me tell you, those cows don’t go where you want them to go, and sometimes the horses don’t either. You alternate from a slow walk up to the cows to a full gallop when you’re chasing them in the corral. Followed by a quick stop when you’re about to run out of room. It was a great way to refine horse handling skills while focusing on handling the cows. You instinctively speed up, slow down, turn and stop. And after a while, your horse does, too!
