22 miles off the coast of LA, about an hour by speed ferry is Catalina Island. It’s a rocky place, 22 miles by 8 miles with most of the inhabitants stacked up onto the hillside in the lee side seaside town of Avalon. Cars are few and far between, golf carts and smart cars are the thing to have.

The Wrigleys thought this island was so ideal, they bought the whole thing in the late 20’s.  That’s a lot of chewing gum, huh?  In the 70’s they deeded 88% of the island to a land conservancy, so most of the island is preserved untouched.

Catalina is home to several hundred head of bison.  In 1924, there were 14 bison brought to the island to film “The Vanishing American” (written by Zane Grey, who lived on Catalina).  After the film was over, there wasn’t enough money to relocate the bison, and they’ve flourished on the island ever since.
