At the Caverns Tour just off Route 66 – me, Mike, nephew Tim, sister Kathy and brother Rolly

Grand Canyon Caverns is a natural limestone cavern near Peach Springs, AZ. (We landed the plane on a gravel strip to get there.) It’s 210 ft. below the ground and the largest DRY cavern in the US. No water, no stalagtites or stalacmites.

The guy who discovered it in 1927 was pretty excited when he lifted his lantern and saw sparkles in the rocks. He was convinced he had found the first combination gold, silver and diamond mine that existed, and bought 800 acres on the spot, preparing to mine the mother lode. Unfortunately for him, he had to depend on tourists (we’re not quite as lucrative).

In 1962, during the Cuban Missile Crisis, Grand Canyon Caverns was declared one of several US Government bomb shelters. To this day, there are enough rations, medicine, portable potties and water to take care of 2,000 people for up to 2 weeks! They only forgot one thing… no toilet paper :P
